Wheat breeding for Hessian fly resistance at ICARDA

نویسندگان

چکیده

Hessian fly (HF), Mayetiola destructor (Say) is an important pest of wheat in North Africa, America, Southern Europe, Northern Kazakhstan, Northwestern China, and New Zealand. It can cause up to 30% yield losses sometimes result complete crop failure if infestation coincides with young stage the crop. Studies to-date have shown availability genetic diversity resources (landraces, wild relatives, cultivars, etc.) for resistance fly. About 37 genes been reported from these fly, which, some deployed singly or combination breeding programs develop high yielding varieties HF. Deployment resistant different agro-ecologies other integrated management measures plays key role control This paper summarizes importance, life cycle, mechanisms resistance, gene mining, efforts HF resistance.

Breeding for Salt-Resistance Using Transgressive Segregation in Spring Wheat

Hybrid populations (F3) derived from cross between four moderate salt-resistant spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were assessed for transgressive segregation of salt-tolerant genotypes allowing germination and emergence at 350 mM NaCl for 30 days. The achieved Selection intensity was the order of 0.24-0.27 in these segregation populations (22-25 seedlings from 9000 seeds). Assessment of trans...

Induced epidermal permeability modulates resistance and susceptibility of wheat seedlings to herbivory by Hessian fly larvae

Salivary secretions of neonate Hessian fly larvae initiate a two-way exchange of molecules with their wheat host. Changes in properties of the leaf surface allow larval effectors to enter the plant where they trigger plant processes leading to resistance and delivery of defence molecules, or susceptibility and delivery of nutrients. To increase understanding of the host plant's response, the ti...

Genetic Mapping of an Aegilops tauschii–derived Hessian Fly Resistance Gene in Common Wheat

Hessian fl y [Mayetiola destructor (Say)] is a major threat to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production in the eastern United States. Cultivar releases containing major Hessian fl y resistance genes have proven effective in minimizing losses caused by this pest. Nevertheless, the ephemeral nature of major gene resistance necessitates the identifi cation of novel sources of resistance. Hessian fl...

Searching for wheat resistance to aphids and wheat bulb fly in the historical Watkins and Gediflux wheat collections.: Wheat resistance to aphids and wheat bulb fly

Insect pests can reduce wheat yield by direct feeding and transmission of plant viruses. Here we report results from laboratory and field phenotyping studies on a wide range of wheat, including landraces from the Watkins collection deriving from before the green revolution, more modern cultivars from the Gediflux collection (north-western Europe) and modern UK Elite varieties, for resistance to...

Gene-for-gene defense of wheat against the Hessian fly lacks a classical oxidative burst.

Genetic similarities between plant interactions with microbial pathogens and wheat interactions with Hessian fly larvae prompted us to investigate defense and counterdefense mechanisms. Plant oxidative burst, a rapid increase in the levels of active oxygen species (AOS) within the initial 24 h of an interaction with pathogens, commonly is associated with defenses that are triggered by gene-for-...
